Glenn Simmions, a talented folk artist whose creative spirit touched the hearts of many, was called home on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at 74. He leaves behind a legacy of artistry and a unique perspective on life.
Born on June 15, 1949, Glenn grew up with a deep passion for folk art and his faith in God; he often described his art as a journey to enlightenment and self-discovery. Through financial losses and severe health concerns, Glenn clung to his art and faith to carry him through the dark times. His paintings on rural African-American life and sculptures have attracted countless individuals far and wide who appreciated the depth of his creativity. He was most notable for his work with sculptures he created from discarded and found materials. A passion of his rooted in his faith. He often compared it to how Christ can take broken lives and make them whole again.
He was preceded in death by his Father, Willie Simmons, his mother, Annie Mack Daniels Simmons, and siblings, Wayne Simmons and Harold Simmons, Corey Simmons, and Velma Smart. He leaves to cherish his memories his Children, Philancia Gordon (Derrick), Joseph Simmons (Demetria), Rachell Arnett, and Candice Brown (Jarvis); his grandchildren, Azure Harvey, David Arnett, Joseph Simmons, De’Ayja Arnett, Devin Gordon, Destyne Arnett, Jordan Brown, and Adrian Gordon; his siblings: Dannie Simmons, Michael Simmons (Caroline), Virginia "Ginger" Parker, Mark Simmons, Kandice Warner, Kevnor Dyer, and Latanya King; and a host of nephews, cousins, and family. He also leaves behind his devoted friends Starla Davis and Ingrid Nuss. In honoring his memory, we can find solace in the beautiful art he leaves behind, each a testament to his unique perspective on life. His creative legacy will forever remind us of the artist he was.
A memorial service to celebrate Glenn’s life will be held on Saturday, October 7th, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at BTW Funeral Home, 1108 E Screven St, Quitman, GA 31643. We invite friends and family to join us in paying tribute to his artistry and the indelible mark he left on all who have met him.
As we say our final farewells to Glenn, may we remember him not only for the art he created but for the individuality and depth that made him a unique and irreplaceable soul.
