ANDREW SMITH, SR of South Hill, VA, lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday, September 27th, 2023. He was 75 years old, and the family is deeply saddened by his passing. Andrew was born on February 4th, 1948, in Buckingham, VA and attended Carter G. Woodson High School there. After finishing his education, Andrew went on to serve honorably in the Army, the National Guard, and the Reserves. While he was born and raised in the Buckingham area, Andrew has called South Hill, VA his home for more than twenty years.

Andrew was predeceased by his oldest son, Andrew Smith, Jr.; his parents, William and Virginia Smith, and his brother, Wesley Smith.

Andrew was an extraordinarily enterprising man and held a variety of jobs and responsibilities throughout his life. As a youth, he saved up money to purchase his first car by picking tobacco, and even worked in a leather shop with his siblings during a brief stay in New Jersey. Upon returning to his hometown, Andrew would get a job working in the Virginia Department of Corrections where he excelled and ascended to leadership positions. He remained there for 33 years, until his retirement as Lieutenant. During much of this time, Andrew also owned and operated a trucking and lumber business throughout the Buckingham area, cutting and selling pulpwood to local businesses, and firewood to local homes.

Outside of work and his family, Andrew’s greatest passion was his never-ending love of cars. From an early age he found himself fascinated with automobile culture and became proficient in car care, repair, and customization, with his projects winning trophies in several shows. While he was known to never let a good deal pass him by on nearly any vehicle, classic cars truly had a place in his heart, with one of his final purchases being a 1955 Chevy Bel Air. Andrew would also purchase a Harley Davidson and dabble in the world of motorcycles, becoming a proud member of the Possie Bike Club of Victoria, VA. In addition to these pursuits, Andrew enjoyed spending time with his beloved family, watching westerns, debating ideas, and taking care of the many flowers and plants around his home.

Everyone who knew Andrew knew how strong-willed, focused, kind, and generous he could be. Andrew was absolutely filled with a passion for life, and this was obvious even after a single meeting. Andrew is survived by his partner in love- Theresa Terry “Bootie” Smith, South Hill, VA; his son, Quinton (Adia) Smith, Knightdale, NC; his grandchildren, Ebony (Lamont) Melvin, Durham, NC; Aiyana and Lela Smith, Knightdale, NC; his great-grandson Amir Melvin, Durham, NC; his siblings- Pearl Monroe, Mary (Marcellus) Bartee, William (Annie Lou) Smith, Jr., Easter Marlene Holman, Virginia (George) Johnson, and William A. Smith, all of Dillwyn, VA; children he helped reared- Chelsee and George Feggins, II both of South Hill, VA; Godchild- JaColby Roberts; devoted and caring friends- Reverend Nathaniel “Nate” Morgan, Michael “Mike” Ragland, George Ball, Arthur “Junnie” Walker, Jr., Howard “Booney” Alexander, Tommy “Monk” Barksdale, Dwight Bacon, and Kim Carson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other friends.

We will miss him more than words can say.

Asking ALL attendees to please wear a mask.
