John Wesley Butler, Jr. son of the late John W. Butler, Sr. and the late Gladys M. Washington Butler was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
He began his formal education in the Harrisburg School District and completed his formal education at Boggs Academy, a college preparatory school for African Americans in Keysville, Georgia. John then joined the Job Corps. and later the United States Marine Corps. Upon completion of basic training he was assigned to the White House as a military policeman. John was later promoted to Lance Corporal and assigned to provide security during the transport of international prisoners.
Upon leaving the Marine Corps., John worked different jobs in the field of security and construction. His interest in the trades led him to pursue electrical training. At the time of his health decline, John had been employed by Amtrak inspecting and maintaining air brake systems. John was an avid shopper, stylish dresser and cook; these were his most loved hobbies.
John transitioned into eternal life on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 around 5:00 a.m., at the age of 57 years at the Center for Hope Hospice in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
In addition to his parents, his brother, Ronald M. Butler and his sister, Cheryl L. Butler-Weedon preceded him in death and he leaves to celebrate his life his children and his grandchildren; his brother, Wallace L. Butler (Cecelia); his sister, Angela Y. Brooks (Frederick); his aunt, Carol Robbins; his “soul-mate”, Darlene Robertson; as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
John's life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 3, 2023 in the Chapel of the Major H. Winfield Funeral Home with visitation 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and burial in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
