Mr. Harvey Glance, 66, of Mesa, AZ, formerly of Phenix City, AL passed Monday, June 12, 2023 in Mesa, AZ.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. EST (9:00 a.m. CST), Saturday, June 24, 2023 at Franchise Missionary Baptist Church, 1000 Dillingham Street, Phenix City, AL with Dr. Raymond Cochran, pastor, officiating. Interment to follow in Lakeview Memory Gardens, 3800 Highway 280 - 431 N, Phenix City, AL.
Visitation will be Friday, June 23, 2023 from 12 - 5:30 p.m. EST (11 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. CST).
Harvey Edward Glance was born March 28, 1957, the fourth child to Wheeler, Sr. and Ella Lee McCoy Glance.
He was educated in the Phenix City School District graduating from Central High School in the class of 1975. He attended and graduated from Auburn University after receiving a track and field scholarship. He was introduced to the world as he competed in the 1976 Olympics held in Montreal, Canada. He won his Gold Medal in the 4x4 100 relays. He also became the fourth fastest man in the world in those same games. Harvey was a four time Olympian.
Harvey was the first black coach at both Auburn University and The University of Alabama in any sport. His greatest joy in coaching came in being the coach of his adoptive son, Kirani James who has won a gold, silver and bronze medal in three different Olympic Games. Harvey's many accomplishments, awards, inductions are known throughout social media, newspapers and in history, there are too many to list.
Harvey was preceded in death by his father, Wheeler Glance, Sr.; mother, Ella Lee Glance; grandmother, Lurline Anderson and his nephew, Reginald Glance.
He leaves his precious memories to be cherished by his devoted and loving wife, Dr. Tammi Williams Glance; three sons, Walter Gordy, III; Carter Gregory and Kirani James; four siblings, Wheeler (Glenda) Glance, Jr., Patricia Glance, Robert (Betty) Glance, Ella Mae (Wayne) Smith; two nephews, Marques (Tonya) Glance, Patrick (Shekelia) Glance; three nieces, Teresa Richards, Keacha (Rossell) Wigfall and Rachel Glance; 13 great nieces and nephews; two aunts, Effie Gunn and Jolene McCoy; cousins/brothers, Marion (Nettie) McCoy, Jr., Jeffery (Ola) McCoy; cousins/sisters, Margaret Davis, Arnita Bell, Vanessa McCoy, Phyllis McCoy, Mary Lois McCoy, and Nickelchia (Ricky) White. He has other loving cousins and uncountable friends here and around the world.
