Elder Mary Virginia Burnett 94, transitioned from this life on Tuesday, the 6TH of June 2023. She was born on the 21ST of October 1928 to the late James Robert and the late Annie Mae Turner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Andrew Burnett; a sister, Rosella T. Mosley, and three brothers, James W. Turner, Jessie M. Turner, and Lawrence E. Turner.
Virginia attended Samuel H. Hairston School at an early age. She also was a dedicated & faithful, member of Mt. Olive East Christian Church (DOC) for many years until her health declined. She enjoyed actively attending Bible School, Disciple Women’s Fellowship, and being an Elder. She was a lifetime member of the Preston Community Center.
She dedicated her life to serving the sick as that was a passion of hers along with making cakes, planting flowers, but most of all spending time with her family during each holiday season.
Virginia worked as a domestic worker for the Green family in New York for twelve years, and later for the Coleman family for a number of years before retiring.
Those left to cherish her memory include one daughter, Gertrude V. Johnson (Barry) of Martinsville, VA; two grandsons, Jeffrey L. Johnson of Charlotte, NC, and Darryl M. Johnson of Collinsville, VA; two sisters, Fannie M. Berry of Bealton, VA, and Shirley T. Penn of Spencer, VA; one brother, Darnell Turner (Sharon) of MD; seven godchildren, Kenneth Green (Holly) of IL; Rives Coleman (Tiffany), Lester Coleman, James Coleman, Anne Parker Coleman, and James “Nubby” Coleman, Jr (Beverly), and Lucy Coleman Mutch (Justin); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A visitation service will be held on Monday, June 12, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12 noon at Mt. Olive East Christian Church (DOC), 3611 Spencer-Preston Rd., Martinsville, VA, with Dr. Kenneth Davis, Eulogist. The burial will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens, 2256 Carver Rd., Martinsville. A public viewing will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at Hairston Funeral Home, 301 Fayette St., Martinsville between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Other times, the family will be receiving friends at the home of her daughter & son-in-law, Gertrude & Barry Johnson, 850 Carver Rd., Martinsville, VA.
