Obituary For Mrs. Maurice Rivers

Maurice Garvins Rivers was born August 9th, 1949, to the late William and Eunice Garvins Sr. in Memphis, Tennessee. Her spiritual life began at an early age at St. Anthony Church. A proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and she made sure you were aware of the school’s motto “We Lead, and Others Follow”. She was truly proud to be a warrior. She attended Owen College following high school.

She was united in holy matrimony to Leonard E. Rivers Sr. and to this union, two children were born.

Mrs. Rivers was a loving mother, wife, sister, grandmother, and aunt affectionately known as “Cookie”. The matriarch of her family. To know her was to absolutely love her. She was kind and would give you the shirt off her back. Always helping others and never expecting anything in return. If she could save the world, she would. A mentor to her siblings, nieces, and nephews. Truly a selfless person with a heart of gold. Maurice was creative and crafty. She enjoyed making decorative baskets and wreaths in her spare time.

Maurice had a lengthy career with the United States Postal Service. She was a dependable and an industrious worker. There she served 25 years and retired as a mail handler.

She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Leonard E. Rivers Sr.; children, Sharma Blocker and Leonard E. Rivers Jr.; five grandchildren, Christopher Blocker, Darian Blocker, Connor Rivers, Demetria and Antarrius Bailey: three great-grandchildren, A’Zaria Blocker, Taiden Blocker, and Tristian Blocker; one sister, Vanessa Robinson; sisters-in-law, Jacqueline (Malcolm) Garvins, Carolyn (Darrell) White, Mary Fisher, and Pearl Rivers of Stanton, Tennessee; five brothers-in-law, Dennis Davis, John Davis, Christopher (Bertha) Davis, Jimmy Joe Rivers of Stanton, Tennessee, and David Rivers of Stanton, Tennessee; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She also leaves her best friends, Elizabeth Booker and Frankie Crockett.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Burnette “Faye” Garvins, Ophelia Powell, and Henree Morgan; brothers, William “Billy” Garvins and Malcom “Mike” Garvins; and special friend, Albert Sykes.

The family will receive friends Saturday, May 20, 2023 9:00am-9:55am with a funeral service to follow at 10:00 am both services will be held at St. Augustine Catholic Church 1169 Kerr Ave, Memphis, TN 38106.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery 1663 Elvis Presley Blvd, Memphis, TN 38106

Maurice, I will miss our conversations, laughs and pictures we shared with each other. I had no clue when I shared my grandbabies hunting their eggs with you for Easter would be our last time communicating on this side. I will remember you always in my heart.
