Mother Thewantha B. Hines, 93, of Harrisburg, was promoted to Glory on Tuesday, April 18,2023, at Harrisburg Hospital.
She was the cherished widow and first lady of the late Pastor Carl E. Hines Jr., former pastor of Shiloh Church of God in Christ, in Harrisburg PA. She was born in Reading PA, a graduate of Reading High School and an accomplished pianist and musician.
Mother Hines was the oldest of six siblings. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Matthew, Howard, Lewis Henry, Joseph Jones, as well as a sister Ruth Williams. Mother Hines met and married Pastor Carl E. Hines at Mt Zion Church of God in Christ in Reading, Pennsylvania. The couple soon followed the call of ministry to Shiloh where they served faithfully for forty-one years. This was a blessed union for 56 years and Mother Hines continued to support the ministries and vision of her late husband. She served as a member and musician for the Shiloh Sanctuary Choir, Mother’s Board, Spiritual Mother to the Daughter’s Hannah Prayer Group at Shiloh, Shiloh Noon Day Prayer Leader and former vice president and president of the Interdenominational Minister’s Wives and Widows Association. Mother Hines faithfully served as the Church Mother of Upon This Rock Ministries Church of God in Christ in Harrisburg until her passing. She wore many hats: loving wife, devoted mother, proud grandmother, supportive first lady, musician, intercessor, church mother, and community leader. In her leisure, she loved to travel, host family and friends in her home and enjoyed desserts and sweets. Her greatest loves were God, her beloved husband Carl, family, and church family.
Mother Hines is survived by daughter, First Lady Carol Scott (Kevin)of Harrisburg; son, Supt.William Hines (Denise) of Harrisburg; daughter, Evangelist Donna Doziar of Harrisburg; daughter, Pastor Jacquelyn Swan (Willie) of Lebanon; son, Mark Hines of Harrisburg; daughter, Thewantha Torain (Erick) of New Jersey; thirteen grandchildren; 41 great grands and five great-great grandchildren.
A celebration of Mother Hines’ life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 28 in the Sanctuary of Shiloh Church of God in Christ, 5950 Derry St, Harrisburg, with viewing from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and burial in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

I chose blue for my lit candle because Mother Hines was that breath of fresh air! No matter what you were feeling any given day, after talking to Mother Hines you left with a feeling like you can breathe again! She was so personable, I LOVED that I was Natascha when she saw me and not Sister Wilburn! She will be greatly missed and I rejoice with her while she has gone to be with the Lord as well as the love of her life! 💙
