Deacon Donny Lee “Soft Talker” Mitchell, Sr.
A Time to Serve: Donny, Sr. was a dedicated member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Pittsview, Alabama where he was Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, usher, Usher Board Director, Treasurer, Bible Study Teacher, and Sunday School Superintendent.
Time to Work: He worked at Fieldcrest Mill in Columbus, GA, in Cocoa Florida as concrete worker, and Frog Pond Turf as a Fork Lift Driver.
A Time to Be Remembered: A dedicated and devoted wife of 49 years, Estell Truttling Mitchell, September 2, 2023 would have been 50 years, but God had other plans; his parents, late Jim Pink Mitchell and late Elmer Denson Mitchell both of Hurtsboro, Alabama; two sons, the late Donny Lee Mitchell, Jr. and Nehemiah (Denice) Mitchell of Smiths Station, Alabama; five grandchildren, Lakeisha Rivers of Pittsview, Alabama, Moriah Mitchell, Zacharias Mitchell, and Luke Mitchell all of Smiths Station, Alabama, and Levante Rivers of Phenix City, Alabama; five siblings, the late Eddie C. (Edna) Denson of Miami, Florida, William (Cora) Denson of Fort Myers, Florida, Jessie (Eva) Denson of Fort Myers, Florida and Marvin Mitchell all of Palm Bay, Florida, Mason (Andrew) Williams-Grubbs of Cocoa, Florida; brothers- in-law, Howard (Mollie) Truttling of Pittsview, Alabama, Eddie C. Truttling of Elmore, and Stanley Wiley of Fort Myers, Florida.
His hobbies were playing checkers, taking pictures, fishing, and studying the Bible. He could play checkers for hours on end against anyone. He liked playing pool but he had to give it up because someone asked him “why is a man like you in this type of place”. He used to enjoy talking over the CB with the handle “Soft Talker” with his wife “Dark and Lovely”. He enjoyed watching football, baseball, basketball, wrestling, and boxing. He did not have a favorite team nor would he root for one team over the other.
He attended Russell County Training School in Hurtsboro, Alabama where he graduated in May of 1968. He also attended the Senior Citizen Center in Hurtsboro, Alabama.
A big part of his time and life was spent being a Disciple of Jesus Christ. He would visit and witness to people about Jesus Christ. He always had a Bible with him and gave many different types of Bibles to many people. At home, he would read and study the Bible to prepare to teach and to learn more about the word of God. He taught Sunday School at the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church for decades. He taught Bible Study at Shady Grove Baptist Church in the Battle Community and at Mount Sinai Baptist Church in Hatchechubbee, Alabama for more than a decade. He would sit at home, read the Bible and listen to gospel music for hours each week.
It is with much sadness to hear of the rent passing of beloved Donnie. I grew affectionately knowing Donnie and attending Sunday School and Sunday morning worship with him at Antioch. I knew him to be soft spoken with a beautiful smile. He always carried his Bible and shared good news about God and his love. Donnie was a perfect gentleman and he was always mindful of his place in the church family, community, and the world. He will be solely missed and forever loved by all who knew him. I extend my deepest condolences to his loving wife, Estelle, children, siblings, and the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church family at the loss of someone special. May God comfort your heart and grant you peace during this difficult time. The family of the late Robert Harrison and Alice Upshaw Miles, Hobart, Indiana
