Obituary For Glenda Taylor Brooks

On a spring-like sunny morning, Glenda Taylor Brooks transitioned peacefully on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at The Retreat at Conyers Assisted Living facility in Georgia.

Glenda was born as the second oldest on November 25, 1944 to high school sweethearts; the late James and Ella (Johnson) Taylor in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Glenda accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Zion First Baptist Church in Rocky Mount. Glenda was educated at Bee Holman’s nursery school, O.R. Pope and Abraham Lincoln Elementary school. Glenda along with her kindergarten best friend, Shirley Cordell-Robinson, were the first black reporters for the Evening Telegram newspaper. The title of their weekly column was the Lincoln Roundup. Glenda graduated with her beloved Class of 1963 from Booker T. Washington High School, Rocky Mount. She would often reminisce about her high school days culminating with singing “Booker T, we love you”. After graduation, she was slated to follow her older brother Milt and attend North Carolina A&T State University with a major in Journalism. Due to life events, she unenrolled and relocated to Cape May, New Jersey and then Brooklyn, New York.

Glenda was afforded the opportunity to become an operator for New York Telephone Company. This is where she met the love of her life, Ulysses “Les”, in the cafeteria. After their two-year courtship and him wooing her with the song “Stay In My Corner” by the Dells, they were united in marriage on June 28, 1969 at Berean Missionary Baptist Church, Brooklyn. They were blissfully married for 49 years until Les’ transition on August 30, 2018.

Four years into their marriage, they decided to relocate from Hollis, Queens to Glen Allen, Virginia. Glenda was fortunate to be able to receive a transfer from New York Telephone Company to then C&P Telephone Company. She was a dedicated and loyal member of CWA Local 2201. Glenda earned countless awards as a Fraud Investigator and was blessed to retire at 54 years of age. Even with the many accolades, she considered one of the biggest achievements in her life was becoming a mother to Damita Joi in 1974.

Glenda was best known for her quick wit, matter-of-fact responses, and her exceptional memory. She loved to have fun playing music and dancing and especially talking on the phone. While Glenda believed in having fun, she executed order and cleanliness in the house. Her daughter often joked that her favorite perfumes were Murphy’s Oil Soap, Old English furniture polish and Johnson’s Wax. Glenda believed that keeping items neat and clean was showing God how she appreciates Him for His many blessings.

Glenda was a member of Cedar Street Baptist Church until she joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Glen Allen, in 1980. There, she was a faithful and active member of the Missions Ministry until the pandemic and the decline of her health. Everyone who knew her, knew where her favorite pew was located. Glenda will be truly missed by her Mt. Olive Baptist family, her Laurel West subdivision family, friends and former co-workers.

In addition to her husband preceding her in death, she was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, London Gia Jackson, sister, Marcia V. Taylor and brothers, James M. “Milt” Taylor and Maurice L. Taylor.

Left to cherish her memory are her devoted daughter, Damita B. Jackson (Larry); granddaughters, Lei’Lani and Larri Jackson all of Atlanta, Georgia; brother, Darius Taylor of Atlanta, Georgia; nieces, Sheri T. Tyler (Albert) and Sherry W. Butler of Pottstown, Pennsylvania; nephew, Maurice D. Taylor (Kara); four great-nieces and three great-nephews; sister-in-law, Juanita L. Brooks of Pottstown, Pennsylvania; aunt, Carolyn Taylor of Portsmouth, Virginia; God-daughter, Shirlette Robinson of Fredericksburg, Virginia; devoted neighbors Reginald SR, Alice and Candace Banks, other relatives and dear friends.

Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. where viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, March 9, 2023. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 10 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 8775 Mt. Olive Avenue, Glen Allen. Rev. Darryl G. Thompson officiating.Interment Washington Memorial Park.

Glenda was a beautiful spirited person. She always wanted to know how my mother was doing before my mother passed. Rest in Peace Glenda . We will miss you at Mt Olive.❤️🙏🏽

My Friend since Kindergarten with Miss Bea Holman and Miss Tee's Sunshine Band, Glenda and I shared a sisterly bond. There are soooooo many memories and all are special. A bridesmaid in my wedding and Damita a junior bridesmaid,Les and she became dear friends to my husband and were great godparents to our daughter Shirlette. Even though she had some struggle toward the end, she always remained loving, kind, and happy. She so loved her girl dad husband Les and her Damita Joi. Deepest condolences to the Family. Our hearts are saddened. Glenda was one of the best neighbors anyone could have asked for. She always invited us to family functions & had plenty of delicious food. She was a warm & welcoming Christian woman. I enjoyed our many chats. Condolences to her family. Rob & Elaine Avery & family.

It has been difficult for me ever since I learned of Glenda's demise. I, too, was in Miss Bea Holman's nursery school. We met again in the 5th grade when Glenda enrolled in O. R. Pope Elementary School where we became fast friends. In addition to graduating from high school together, I was a bridesmaid in her and Les' wedding in 1969. I have so many fond memories but they are too numerous to list here. I don't know what my life will be like without Glenda in it but I do know that God makes no mistakes. Glenda worked on a different floor, but each time we saw each other in the halls or on the elevator we always talked and laugh together. She never met a stranger. To the family, Glenda was my phone buddy we would talk and laugh about everything. Our last conversation before she got sick was she had discovered bacon grease in a jar at her local grocers.
