MR. ROBERT EDWARD PURYEAR, affectionately called “George”, son of the late George Puryear and Sallie Clark Pettus, was born April 9, 1937 in Chase City, VA. After battling several health issues, he departed this life February 17, 2023 in the Hundley Center, South Hill, VA. He was also preceded in death by his three sisters- Dorothy Dodson, Shirley Minor, and Carolyn Joyce Flyte.

At an early age he was baptized and joined Greater Union Baptist Church, Chase City, VA. He attended West End High School.

Robert later migrated to New York City, where he met and married the love of his life, Madeline Grace Booker and to this union five lovely children were born. He attended New Covenant Church of Christ Baptist Church, Queens, NY.

After learning a trade from his father, Robert became a steel worker for many years at Dewes and Gumbs in Long Island City, NY. He also did various jobs such as exterminating and carpentry work. If you ever had an encounter with Mr. Puryear “George”, he made you instantly feel like family, and he made you feel like he had known you for years. He loved to make people laugh, and he was well known and loved very much.

Robert leaves to mourn his devoted wife of 60 plus years- Madeline B. Puryear of the home; five children-Robert (Deborah ) Puryear, South Hill, VA; Cornelius (Michelle) Puryear, Queens, NY; Sylvester (Deborah ) Puryear, Hempstead, NY; Sean (Neatie) Puryear, Atlanta, GA and Oretha Lynn Puryear of the home; 12 grandchildren- Latoya, Michael, Shaniqua, Shashona, James, Candice, Jamaine, Naomi, Taylor, Joshua, Debbie (Van) and Monta; 20 great-grandchildren; one brother- Larry Pettus, Baltimore, MD; two sisters- Florence Andrews, Brooklyn, NY and Mary Pettus, Long Island, NY; brother-in-law, Edgar Booker, Brooklyn, NY and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends from New York, Baltimore, Virginia, and Georgia.
