Obituary For Jerome Jerry Younger

Jerome Younger was affectionately known as “Jerry” to family and friends. Jerry was the first born to Cleveland and Lucille Younger on January 11th, 1958 in Newark, NJ. Jerry was preceded in death by his mother Lucille and grandson Javion Younger.

Jerry was raised and educated in the Newark and Irvington public school systems. He graduated from Frank H Morrell High School, Irvington, NJ in June 1976. Shortly thereafter, Jerry enlisted into the United States Army. Jerry served 4 years being stationed in Germany. He received an honorable discharge in the rank of _______.

After his Army service, Jerry enrolled at Bloomfield College in Bloomfield, NJ where he majored in education. In 1981 he relocated to Jackson, MS to help care for his maternal grandmother. In 1985 Jerry met and married Ingrid Dory. They immediately moved back to NJ in August. There were three children born out of this union. Kimmisha Lucille, Jerry Jr., and Jashaun. Jerry worked various jobs to support his family. He returned to Jackson, MS for good with his family.

Jerry accepted Jesus Christ as his lord and savior at a young age. He attended Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Newark, NJ under the leadership of the late Rev. JC Mapson. As an adult, once Jerry finally made Jackson his home he joined the church his grandfather helped build Cynthia Church of Christ Holiness USA under the late Rev. Arthur L Jenkins. Jerry remained a member of Cynthia until his passing.

Jerry was employed by the Jackson Public School System. He had a passion for working with children. He loved introducing dialogue that would peak young minds and would develop lively and interactive discussions. Jerry’s versatility to discuss a wide variety to discuss a wide variety of subject matters endeared him to students, friends, and family alike. Jerry believed in serving and caring for his community. He worked as a security guard with the MS State Hospital for Mental. As well as working as a poll worker for the MS election commission.

Jerry’s love for family was well known. He was a natural nurturer and served as a source of comfort for several family members. He cared for several ailing family members including his maternal grandmother, his own mother and was also primary care custodian for his special needs first cousin. He visited his uncle daily in rehab and never hesitated to help anyone in need.

In 2021 Jerry’s children moved him to Charlotte, NC to help him deal with some pre-existing health issues. After a brief illness Jerry departed this earthly life on January 16, 2023 at Pineville Atrium Hospital in Charlotte, NC.

Jerry leaves behind to morn his passing and cherish his memory 3 children, Kimmisha Younger Joseph, Jerry Younger Jr and Son in law Jodi Joseph- Charlotte, NC; and Jashaun Younger- San Diego, CA. His father Cleveland W Younger- Jackson, MS; Sister Karen McKenzie and Brother in Law Terrance Mckenzie– North Plainfield, NJ. Brother Christopher Younger -Memphis,TN. 2 grandchildren Jashaun Younger Jr- Houston, TX Jacob Younger- San Diego, CA; 2 grand nieces Keyasia Walker- Bloomfield, NJ and Delilah Smith- Elizabeth, NJ. Paternal Aunts: LaPearl Myricks, Shirly(Curtis) Cloud, Cookie Younger- Jackson, MS. Carrie Molyneaux- California. Paternal Uncles: Walter Younger- Jackson, MS and Mark (Jeanette) Younger- California, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 26, 2023 at 1:00 p.m., Cynthia Church of Christ Holiness USA, 3520 N. Shellrock Road, Jackson, MS 39213 with burial in Wilson Cemetery, Highway 49 North, Jackson, MS 39209.
