Mrs. Johnson will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.
On January 18, 2023, surrounded by family, Mrs. Gladys Thompson Johnson saw the face of God as she closed her eyes in this world. Born, Gladys Ann Thompson on December 15, 1949, to the late Joseph Nesbit and Susan Sarah (Wickerson) Thompson in Georgetown, SC. She knew the Lord for herself and at a young age, she accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at Cumberland AME Church. From this point, she began her walk with Christ which would continue until her last day.
Mrs. Johnson along with her siblings was educated in the public schools of Georgetown, SC. In 1968, her last year of matriculation at Rosemary High School, she was crowned Miss Rosemary. After high school, she attended South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, SC. One fine day in 1970, a mutual friend took her to a worship service at Warren Chapel Baptist Church where she later met the love of her life of 51 years, Mr. Willie William Johnson. After marriage, she joined her husband as a member of Warren Chapel Baptist Church.
Mrs. Johnson was a faithful and dedicated servant of the Lord- working tirelessly in the Church. At Warren Chapel Baptist Church and then later St. Paul Baptist Church of Orangeburg, she served as an Usher, Sunday School Teacher, Missionary, and Deaconess.
She served the Lord not only at church but in her community. She worked as a Patient Accountant at the Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg, SC for 35 years. She was kind, compassionate, and loyal. She loved and cared about so many people. She also loved herself enough to live a healthy life. She participated in annual walk/run marathons, exercised twice a day, and feed her spirit daily. She was a devoted member of the Orangeburg Community Bible Study Group at the First Baptist Church of Orangeburg. Her favorite scripture she would meditate on was Psalms 23. Even though she did not like to sing, one of her favorite songs she would hum was "Lord Lead Me, Guide Me Along the Way".
She loved to travel with the Orangeburg Land Cruisers. Since retiring, she has seen all parts of the world. Of which, she was able to see 48 of 50 states alongside her husband.
She loved her family.
After entering into holy matrimony, a son, Mr. Milo William Johnson, and a daughter Mrs. Leslie Ann Johnson-Williams was born.
She was preceded in death by her parents (Mr. Joseph (Susan) Thompson), two sisters Ms. Mary Thompson and Ms. Maybelle Smith, and one brother, Mr. Vernon Thompson.
She leaves to cherish her fondest memories: her husband, Mr. Willie William Johnson; son, Milo; daughter, Leslie; step daughter, Sia M. Lyimo; grandchildren: Andrew Williams and Phillip Williams; sisters Mrs. Inez Allen, Mrs. Josephine Catoe, and Mrs. Shirvy Stewart all of Houston, TX; a brother, Mr. Joseph (Ella) Thompson of Georgetown, SC; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ada (Leola) Smith of Orangeburg, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, other loving family members, and dear friends.
The family is indebted to the exceptional care and compassion provided by South Carolina House Calls, Amedysis, the Medical University of South Carolina, the Intensive Care Unit staff at the Regional Medical Center, and all of the warriors who prayed with and for her.
