Lester Everette Cumberbatch was born June 18, l94l in Port of Spain, Trinidad' W.I. to Carlton Cumberbatch and Phillippa Plowden Cumberbatch (both deceased). Lester went to meet the Lord on December 8,2022 at the Eastchester Rehab Center in Bronx, NY, at the age of 81. He was one of eight children Merle (deceased), Irvin ( deceased), Ester, Helen, Claire, Keith (deceased), and June. Lester was raised in Port of Spain, Trinidad. He attended Ideal High School. He also attended the Catholic Church as a young man. Lester enjoyed music, singing, playing the steel drums, and making music with a spoon and bottle. He loved going down to the pan yard to hear the steel bands play. He enjoyed flying kites and making them himself. He enjoyed watching sports such as baseball, basketball, and soccer. He was a member of the soccer team and enjoyed it very much. He enjoyed dancing and he loved to whistle. Lester was a great cook and learned to cook on his own. He would call his friends to ask how to make a certain dish and may have to ask again before he got it right. In Trinidad, Lester worked for the Guardian Newspaper on the printing press. Later, he came to the United States in 1972.He got a job working in the garment center and complained about the weather being so cold because he had to work outside. He later got a job through a friend at Park Crescent Nursing Horne in Manhattan, NY. The name of the nursing home was later changed to Kateri Residence. During this time, Lester married his long-time girlfriend from Trinidad, Diane Barrows (Maloney), From this union came one daughter, Lesly Cumberbatch, who preceded him in death; The marriage union was dissolved in 1979. While working at Kateri Residence, he met his now wife Sonja Wynne (Cumberbatch). They were married in 1991. He became the stepfather to Sonja's children. He was an excellent stepfather to the children and grandchildren. He was a great worker and loved by his co-workers and his patients. He took pride in his job as a Certified Nursing Assistant. He was awarded Employee of the Month several times and Employee of the Year twice. He retired from Kateri Residence after 32 years of service. Lester was a member of the Greater Calvary Baptist Church. He was an active singer in the choir and he was also on the usher board. He loved to help at his church, and he was famous cooking Peas and Rice and Callaloo. Lester had great friends and family that would call every week to see how he was doing after suffering from his illness. Lester lived a full life up until the time of his illness' Enjoying every minute and never spoke a bad word against anyone. Always willing to help with that great smile on his face. Never asking for anything in return' Lester, we all love you and will miss you' He leaves to mourn his wife Sonja, his daughter Natalie Franklin, Brooklyn, NY, his stepson, Reverend Dr' Daryl Wynne of Dothan, AL (Vanessa), stepson Gregory Howard (Carol) Middletown, NY, stepson Brandon Howard, Bronx, NY, Stepdaughter Dana Howard, Bronx, NY, his sister Ester Granger San Fernando, Trinidad W.I., Helen Wiltshire of Arima, Trinidad, W.I., Claire Cumberbatch of Washington D.C., and June Cumberbatch of San Fernando Trinidad W.I., his special friends Loderick Stephen of Brooklyn, NY and Jay Clarke of Boston MA., grandchildren Whitney Franklin, Charnise Mohammed, Tamara Barnes, Brittany Guzman, Brian Belton, Gregory Howard, Ciara Howard, Brandon Howard, Alexis Howard, and Madison Howard, and host of great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and great relatives and friends' We will all miss you with that bright smile and being a nice gentle person.
