Armstead Salters dedicated his life to serving students and the community as an educator in Atlanta, Georgia for more than 40 years. In 1969, he became acting Assistant Principal at Washington High School, then assumed the role of Assistant Principal in 1972 before becoming the evening school Principal in 1978. He was assigned Principal of Gideons Elementary School of the historic Pittsburgh community in 1989 where he concluded his career in 2010. As an educator, Mr. Salters advocated for students and encouraged them to pursue excellence in all endeavors. With firm counsel, Mr. Salters challenged his students to never give up by not giving up on them. He knew that obstacles could be overcome with faith in something more than your present circumstance.
Hope and persistence were guiding forces for Mr. Salters as he fought as a Claflin University student during the Civil Rights Movement. He viewed education and determination as key factors to achieving success over any opposition.
