After graduating from Spartanburg High School, he attended Spartanburg Methodist College earning an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice. He then attended the University of South Carolina Upstate and earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Criminal Justice.
Gerard was employed at Spartanburg Boys Home as a counselor for over twenty years.
While in Spartanburg, Gerard was a member of Silver Hill United Methodist Church. When his father moved the family to Columbia SC, they became a part of the Virginia Wingard United Methodist Church family.
Gerard was preceded in death by: his father, Mac Arthur; and his brother, Michael Anthony Goodwin.
Left to cherish his fond memories are: his devoted mother, Juanita H. Goodwin of Columbia SC; sister, Theresa (Michael) Wyatt of Spartanburg SC; five nieces, Michelee Jones of Bloomington TN, Michale (Carrington, Sr.) Payden and Aniyah Payden both of Spartanburg SC, Christina Chiles and Ayana Janelle Tolar both of AC Worth, GA; nephew, Carrington Payden Jr. of Spartanburg SC; seven aunts, Carolyn Housey, Starleen Housey, Virgina Russell, and Christine (Isaih) Aiken of Estill, SC, Mary Lee (Eddie) Ruth of Harrisburg PA, Almeta Housey, Suitland MD, and Vivian Housey of Ellenwood, GA; uncle, Ernest Housey, Glenn Bernie MD; sister-in-law, Idellia Goodwin, Land o’ Lake, FL; three special cousins, Melody (Dean) Wise, Ralph (Dianne) Goodwin of Hendersonville NC and Toby (Danielle) Housey of Bonaire GA; God Aunts, Ms. Dorothy Stewart and Ms. Jean (Jimmy) Moody both of Columbia SC; three God brothers, Bernard (Cheryl) Graham of Woodbridge, VA, Carlos Simpson of Columbia, SC, and Terry (Lesha) Brannon of Boilings SC; and a host of relatives and friends.
Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2022 at 12:00 noon at Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church, 1500 Broad River Rd., Columbia, SC 29210.
