Gregory Orrin Bates

Gregory Orrin Bates, son of the late William Simpson Bates and Virginia L. Gray Queens entered eternal life on October 28, 2022. Preceded him in death, his brother, James C. Queen, Jr. Greg was born May 30, 1954 in Washington D.C. He was raised in Charles County, Maryland and Washington D.C. He served in the United States Army and Air Force. He worked for Lockheed Martin ( it started out as IBM, and they went through a number of name changes over the years); he retired from Lockheed Martin. He also retired from the Air Force National Guard. After retirement he worked part time with the transportation department for the Fauquier County public schools. His passion was riding his bicycle(s); he was a member of a riding group “The Spokesmen” and he road for different charities. He also loved to play golf and was a member of the Pamoja Golfers. After retirement he planned lots of bike trips, or as he said his bucket list of places he wanted to ride which included various places in California. Places he did cycle were Florida, Italy, France, Texas, San Diego-Arizona, Washington D.C. and Pittsburgh, up state New York and he did a cross country trip. He rode whenever he could schedule a trip and his riding buddy Patrick Harris shares his love of riding and rode most of these riding adventures with him. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 32 years, Jane Terry Bates and their children, Gregory, Jr. and Shaun T. Bates. A loving aunt,Eliza Webb; mother-in-law, Mary Terry, four sister-in-laws, Shirley Jefferson, Eunice Christian(Vann), Aurelia Terry, and Anna Lyles Queen; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd., where viewing will be held Friday, November 11 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Scott's Chapel, 116 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Rev. Dennis Gavin, officiating. Interment services will be held Tuesday, November 15, at 10:30 a.m. at Quantico National Cemetery.
