Obituary For Connie Surratt

The Life of Mrs. Connie Mae Surratt

Ecclesiastes 3: 1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. A Time To Be Born She was born on October 17, 1919 in Cleveland County, NC to the late Bell Youngblood Bridges and was raised by her stepfather, the late Anthony Bridges.

A Time to Work Ms. Connie Mae started working at a young age in the cotton fields and local homes in Cleveland County before landing a job at J & C Dyeing which later became Doran Mills where she retired from after 14 years of service. As the second oldest in her family, she also helped raise her brothers & sisters while their mother worked outside the home to make a living for the family. A Time To Live Ms Connie Mae loved the Lord, and she attended Mt. Calvary Baptist Church for most of her life. Her hobbies were gardening, cooking for her family, walking, sewing and shopping. Ms. Connie Mae was a woman with style and class. She was always immaculately dressed and, even at 103 years young, she had a regal bearing. She enjoyed dressing up, and for the ones of you that knew her, knew that she would always be cleaner than the board of health, all the way from her head to her toes..Not only was her dressing sharp, but her mind also was sharp as a tack. Although she didn’t have the opportunity to get the education that she so desired, that didn’t stop her, because she went back to school after retirement when she was in her 70’s, just so she could learn how to read. Ms. Connie Mae earned a certificate of Silver Life Membership of the NAACP in Oct. 2010. A Time to Love . She was a pillar of strength and a dynamo of a woman. She was an independent woman, who was determined to do things on her own, even at the age of 103. Although she celebrated great achievements, and suffered tragic losses, through it all, she demonstrated the strength to endure, survive, and thrive. She was a phenomenal woman, who taught us the power of compassion, and passion to love and help others. She was the woman who taught us what strength, the power of love, and the power of family should look like. Therefore, we all are who we are because of her. A Time to Serve According to Proverbs 14:1 a wise woman builds her home. She was such a wise woman. Also, Proverbs 31:13 tells us that the Proverbs 31 woman works with willing hands. Willing hands! Those two words speak volumes about her attitude. To minister means: “attend to the needs of someone” – doesn’t that totally sum up homemaking? Every task you perform, every meal you prepare, every dish you wash, every nose you wipe, every kiss you give – you are ministering to the needs of someone you love and that sums up Ms. Connie Mae. A Time To Die Mrs. Connie Mae Davenport Surratt of Shelby, NC completed her work here and went home to be with the Lord after 103 blessed years on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at Wendover Hospice House to joyously reunite with all her family in Heaven. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Surratt; her children, Bernice Sutton, Jessie Ponder, Darrell Davenport, Sheila Degree and Sanda Davenport; her siblings, Calvin Bridges, Ruth Gidney, Ruby Bridges, Iola Dillingham, Otha Lee Bridges, Ulysses Bridges and Billy Gene Bridges and grandchildren, Sylvia Fowler, Bernita Sutton, Ronald Davenport, Avery Ponder, Johnny Ponder, Gregory Thurman, Sonny Davenport, Marcus Freeman Sherwood Leon Davenport as well as other family who have welcomed her home.

She leaves behind a lifetime of precious memories to her remaining child, Wanda Davenport and husband Ralph Taylor of Shelby and one sister, Shirley Bridges of Shelby. Also she leaves behind twenty-three grandchildren; fifty-three great-grandchildren; seventy great-great grandchildren; twenty-one great-great-great grandchildren to carry out her legacy as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
