Rev. Bernard Phelps is officiating.
KELVIN “POP” PHELPS was born to Mary Magdaline Phelps and John Pough on November 18, 1966, in Brooklyn, NY. He was affectionately given the name Pop by his loving godmother Florence Tisdale at an exceedingly early age, which followed him throughout his life. Pop grew up in Brooklyn, NY until the tender age of twelve when the family relocated to Orangeburg, SC. His education continued in the Orangeburg school district where he soared as a basketball player, receiving many awards and accolades. Upon graduation from Orangeburg Wilkinson High School, he earned a full scholarship to Paine College where he furthered his education and excelled as a basketball star.
Growing up, Pop had many talents and abilities. He was an accomplished artist who could draw anything. He was also an awesome interior designer who had an eye for fashion and the finer things in life. His love for drawing and fashion became second to his passion for basketball. His ability on the basketball court was astounding. He was a team player who dominated his opponents on the court with his superb handling of the ball.
Later in his adult life, Pop relocated to the sunshine state of Florida in pursuit of change where he found peace and solace. He was met with open arms and complete joy from the love of his mom who had already relocated to Florida as well. Pop had many accomplishments in life however, his greatest accomplishment was being a loving dad to his only daughter Kelani.
Pop was the ultimate showman who loved to dress. He was always the GQ guy, the dapper dude, and often called out as the showstopper of the group. He took pride in his looks and was adored by all who knew him. To cherish his memories and his legacy is his wife Jeannie, his loving daughter Kelani, his twin sister CaRon (Richard), his brothers, Wayne (Tyesha), Bernard (Lorraine), John, Shawn (Theresa), Cory (Caretha), Matthew, Mike, and sisters Maxine, Sandy, and Grinda. Nieces and nephews Katesha, Janayja, Adrianne, Alise, Johneice, Wayne, Bernard, Kimberly, Chandler, Jeffery, Tyrese, Cory, Cortina, Tyson, Shalonda, Chris, Dequan, Monti, Ciara and a myriad of other family members. Preceded in death by his mother and father who are rejoicing with the angels as they welcome him with open arms to his new home in heaven.
Mr. Phelps passed away Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at his residence.
