While growing up in North Carolina, Joyce was always known for her strong faith, family, and friendship. Her marriage to Winslo Douglas on June 28, 1969 moved her permanently to Greensboro, a place she would visit during her early years to take care of her cousins and earn money for school. She also loved to attend the General Baptist Oratorical contest while traveling to cities such as Chicago, Atlanta and Baltimore. She truly enjoyed developing the futures of young Christians.

Winslo and Joyce spent time traveling and enjoyed supporting their church. They would often serve others before thinking of themselves. Joyce never met a stranger or a child that she wouldn’t befriend. Joyce had a full life, wanting others around her to know the love of her Lord and Savior. The Douglas house was also open to family, friends, church members and associates.

She is noted for undergoing a groundbreaking laser technique used in her throat and was the only patient recipient of the FDA’s certified laser in the 1990’s. She traveled the country to spread the news about the laser technique in places such as Boston, San Francisco, St. Louis and Washington, D.C. Joyce survived more than 400 operations at Winston Salem Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Douglas received her heavenly wings on October 3, 2022, at 11:05 p.m. She was the matriarch of her family and maintained a profound reverence for her beginnings and a special appreciation for her hometown. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain, and I’ve looked over, and I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight, that we as a people will get to the Promised Land. So I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man! Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!” –Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
