Doris McGowan entered the world on cold day Of February 17, 1946 to the late John T. McGowan & Elease Hunter in Abbeville, S.C. Doris was the baby of 5 children. She gained the nickname “Twill” by her father. As a child she would to talk and talk a lot and he would always tell her “Go Sit Down and Read a Book” I guess she stuck by her Father’s word because all she did was Read but loved to Talk of course.

Doris McGowan attended the public schools of Abbeville County South Carolina and was a graduate of J. S. Wright High School Class of 1964. She loved to sing and was blessed with a beautiful soprano voice. While an 8th grader she joined the choir as a first soprano and maintained that position for the next five years of high school. She was also a member of the pop-singing group "The Clarkettes". They got their name from their Math teacher Mr. Clark. The Clarkettes won every talent show they entered. After high school she relocated to Evanston, Illinois and held a long lasting career position as Customer Service Representative with AT&T. During that time she traveled and enjoyed life. She met a special friend Judy McCorkle they remained friends forever. In 1996, she relocated to Atlanta, Ga where she quickly gained employment with The City Of Atlanta where she retired several years later as Customer Service Supervisor. Doris was also a member of the Kiwanis Foundation where she offered many dedicated hours serving the community

Doris was very popular and well known. Her spirit attracted nothing but greatness. Doris have so many amazing friends because she was an amazing person herself. She was the light in the room and most definitely the classiest in the room. She made connections and life-long bonds with very great people all over the world. She was prominent in her community and also a faithful giver, she contributed to 9 foundations on a monthly basis making her contribution of whatever God placed upon her heart.

Doris was small in stature but she had a big heart, her mantra was, "The Lord put me here to serve" and she did just that, helping all who were fortunate to cross her path. Always the epitome of a young lady she exhibited many wonderful traits, she was quiet, loving, respectful, loyal and dependable. But most of all she was a praying young lady who loved the Lord. She was very active and dedicated in her church. She attended The Love Center lead by Pastor Bryon Broussard since the late 90’s. She loved to serve the Lord. Doris was a prayer warrior at heart. If you ever needed a ear she always knew the exact words for comfort. Whenever someone needed her she was always there. Every school event or function that she was invited to for anyone she was there for support. She loved the younger generation, she offered her support whenever to whomever around the clock for these babies. As her church assignment she worked the nursery for a couple of years and loved been able to care for them. Her love for children was unmatched.

Doris leaves to cherish her loving god son who proceeded her into eternity Michael Teasley. A loving great-niece Kesha Clark (Daron Clark) who she loved like her own. A loving cousin who was more like a sister Darlene Lovett (Dweldon Lovett). 2 Nieces Michelle McGowan & Tamika Baugh. 3 Nephews Charles Tinch (Kimberly Tinch) & Jeffery Dunlap. Great-nieces Arkia Harden, Nakayla Spencer, Darreona Clark, Dereon Dennis, Christina & Chloe Fegins; Great-nephews Montavious Tinch, Darrious Dennis and Deodrick Baugh, a special great-nephew Darrious Clark who was more like her grandson; a host of other relatives and extra special friends.

Dear McGowan Family, I pray for your strength and understanding during this difficult time. Doris was a strong and admirable woman, never failing to ask about classmates or driving to Abbeville to attend funerals or functions. I will truly miss her, sharing birthday and Christmas greeting cards and our deep conversations discussing world events-sometimes laughing until we cried about something silly one of us said, always ending our calls with,"love you" or "we'll talk". She was a dear friend. Jackie
