Her education began in Union Springs, Alabama. After graduating from Parker High School in Birmingham AL., she attended Alabama State University.
She professed her love for Christ and was baptized at an early age. While living in Birmingham, Alabama she was an active member of Sixth Avenue Baptist Church. She was passionate about missions and teaching the word of God, which lead to her serving as a Sunday School teacher and chairperson of missions. She later became a watch care member at Bethesda Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, Virginia, where she remained active until she left her earthly home for her heavenly home.
In 1959, Ernestine wed Robert E. Owens, Sr. and from that union two children were born, Robert, Jr. and Angela. In 1975 she married Constance D. Dill and from that union one daughter was born, Constance.
As Ernestine battled cancer, she moved to Virginia to be closer to her family. With her family's unwavering support and her strong faith in God she became a cancer survivor.
Ernestine stood strong against racial inequality and became the first black person employed by the Social Security Administration in Birmingham, AL. During her career with the Social Security Administration, she was promoted to various management positions, which included benefits and claims analyst. Her last position held was, The Office of Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity (OCREO) (TR) where she provided overall management of the SSA-wide programs of civil rights and equal opportunity, and diversity and inclusion, harassment prevention, reasonable accommodations and disability services. After serving over thirty years, she retired from the Social Security Administration.
Her other affiliations included being a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Ernestine was also involved with the senior ministries at various churches.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Constance D. Dill and brother-in-law, Jimmy Hurd, Sr.
Surviving are her son, Robert E. Owens, Jr., (Rev. Clara), two daughters, Angela Johnson and Constance Webb (Oscar); six grandchildren, Princess and Michelle Owens, Chenea Johnson, Keon, Kira and Kia Webb; three great-grandchildren, Kayla and Robert Owens III, and Caiden Adams; sister, Dorothy Jean Hurd; two nieces, Patricia Lawson (Edmond) and Janice Mays (Emanuel); nephew, Jimmy Hurd, Jr.; a host of great nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, one devoted, Robert E. Owens, Sr.
Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2022 at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Dr. Juanita A. W. Harrison, officiating. Rev. Clara M. Owens, eulogist. As per Ernestine's request, no viewing.
