In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph A. Mitchell.
At young age, Rayford as he was affectionately called, was baptized at St. Paul High Street Missionary Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Martinsville High School. Rayford loved to play softball where he played on the High Street Baptist Church softball team, Tultex softball team, and Dubois All Star Team. Rayford was one of the best pool shooters in Martinsville. He was an avid fisher. He worked at Martin Processing and the Community Market before becoming disabled.
Those left to cherish his memory include: one sister, Constance (Clay) Gravely of Martinsville, VA; Five brothers, Thomas G. Mitchell, Frederick (Joyce) Mitchell, Larry L. Mitchell, and Timothy A. Mitchell all of Martinsville, VA, and Marcus A. Mitchell of Roanoke, VA; two special aunts, Virginia (Richard) Burnette, and Wanda Breeden both of Richmond, VA; special friend, Shelia Divens of Martinsville, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the C.R.V. Memorial Chapel at Hairston Funeral Home with Reverend F. Dion Noel, Eulogist. Burial will follow at Carver Memorial Gardens, 1310 Carver Rd., Martinsville, VA. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at Hairston Funeral Home between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. In accordance with the CDC, a face covering, and social distancing is required.
