Obituary For Charles Wayne Garrett

Charles Wayne ( C. W.) Garrett was the son of Cleveland and Viola Kairy Garrett born on September 29, 1953 in Kansas City, Kansas. He Graduated from San Francisco public schools and graduated from San Francisco State University. He was blessed to work in various careers during his lifetime ranging from the public transit system in San Jose, CA to student affairs at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA to the Arkansas Department of Health. He also served as a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for most of his adult life. He accepted Christ under the leadership of Pastor Newton Carey, Jr. at True Vine Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland, CA. He presided over prison ministry at Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas, CA and said he felt God used him mightily there because he felt he could live out Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,” He also had a heart for church planting following the examples of Christ’s Apostles. He served with Pastor Horacio Jones in Fremont, CA and assisted in the start of Family Bible Fellowship which is a vibrant thriving ministry today. After leaving California he moved to Atlanta, GA where he met the love of his life, Nina Patrice Nelson, MD. Nina was finishing her gastroenterology fellowship at Emory University while he worked for Morehouse College. He loved to say, “I came all the way to Georgia looking for a Georgia Peach, but I found a Mississippi Magnolia instead.” He would go on to say, “She is the one that makes my coffee sweet.” They were married on September 27, 1994 in St. Thomas, USVI. They later became the proud parents of Brittany Lyna Garrett and Donovan Stephen Garrett. From a previous marriage, he was the proud father to Tiffany Garrett and Crystal Garrett. While in Atlanta, GA, he continued his prison ministry as Chaplain at Fulton County Detention Center while working full time in Student Affairs at Morehouse College and he served on the ministerial staff at Greenforest Baptist Church in Decatur, GA under the leadership of Dr. George O. McCalep. He would later serve as pastor of Heart of Atlanta Baptist Church. His heart for church planting and starting new churches continued in Little Rock, AR where he founded Peniel Christian Fellowship. It was a small congregation with a great deal of heart and Holy Ghost power. When he and his family moved to Jackson, Mississippi to assist his wife’s ailing parents and for Nina’s medical career, he pastored Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church for several years before founding Progressive Morningstar Baptist Church. Progressive was a labor of love. He liked to say, “We started meeting in a school cafeteria, then moved to funeral home chapel, and finally to a beautiful edifice on Robinson Street with a gymnasium and a ball field all in just over one year and we were able to get bank financing with less than a year of being a church. Now, that’s God.” At Progressive as with all of his ministry work, he loved winning souls for Christ and ushering them into God’s Kingdom. After moving to Montgomery, Charles and Nina joined New Life Church of God in Christ where they have been richly blessed by Pastor Terry Ellison’s teachings. Charles officially retired from pulpit ministry but continued to share the Gospel with all he met. “…Well done, thy good and faithful servant!” Matthew 25:23… On Monday, May 30, 2022, Charles Wayne Garrett joined his Heavenly Father, the holy angels, and a great cloud of witnesses as God called him to eternal rest. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, Nina Garrett, MD; his children Tiffany Garrett Washington, Crystal Garrett, Brittany Garrett-Dejan , and Donovan Garrett; his grandchildren Malik Garrett, Aniyah Washington and Zakyiah Washington. His loss is also mourned by his brothers Cleo Garrett (Cynthia), Richard Garrett (Margot), Robert Garrett (Connie), and John Garrett, as well as his sisters Joylitha Barksdale (DeMichael, LeStar, Angelo, and Angel) and Susan Garrett-Sims (Pete). He also leaves to mourn his loss a host of nieces and nephews, sisters-in-laws, his extended family (The Kelly Family: Charley Anne Halston, Cheryl Legette, Terrance Kelly, and Kerilynn Kelly-Moss and The Camp Family: Larry and Linda Camp). He was preceded in death by his brother-in-Christ and dear friend, Dr. Will Roy Rogers. He will also be missed by his Progressive Morningstar Family and his New Life Family.
