Hershel Proctor

Mr. Hershel Gene Proctor was born on June 3, 1952, in Cherokee County, South Carolina. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. Arthur Junior Proctor, and the late Ms. Nellie France Lockhart Proctor. Hershel was a graduate of Crest Senior High School and post-graduation, he was drafted and served his country in The United States Army, during the Vietnam War. After receiving an honorable discharge from the military, he returned to Shelby, North Carolina.

Although Hershel worked at a Tire Company by day, he was most known for being a Disc Jockey who worked in radio and in nightclubs across North and South Carolina affectionately known as “Star Child,” in honor of his favorite artist George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic.

Hershel Gene Proctor is survived by his long-term girlfriend of 40 years and mother of his youngest daughter, Ms. Dorothy Whisnant of Shelby, North Carolina, and his four daughters: Dr. Hershell “Nikki” Proctor-Walden (Mr. Kenya Walden) of Orangeburg, South Carolina, Dr. Alexandra Denise Proctor, of Orangeburg, South Carolina, Mrs. Carolyn Lynette Conover (Mr. Gerald Conover) of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Ms. Santana Whisnant of Shelby, North Carolina. In addition, Mr. Proctor is survived by his grandchildren; Kristin Proctor, Alexis Pippins, Hershel Proctor, III, Stephanie Grice, Zoe Proctor, Zyra Lewis, Ivy Poston and his great-grandchildren: Hershel Proctor, IV, Christopher Lee, Aubree Scofield and Julian Schofield. He also has six siblings: Melinda Proctor Mastroni (Mr. Greg Mastroni) of Shelby, North Carolina, Lee Arthur Proctor of Memphis, Tennessee, Samuel Emil Proctor (Mrs. Sherry) of Shelby, North Carolina, Dorothy Denise Proctor of Shelby, North Carolina, Reginald Bernard Proctor of Shelby, North Carolina, and Frances Darlene Proctor of Shelby, North Carolina. Finally, Uncle Hershel will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Hershel Proctor is credited with bringing the love of music and introducing golf to this family. He was also very proud of his daughters and their educational accomplishments. As a brother, father, uncle, confidant, spiritual leader, and prophet Mr. Hershel Gene Proctor has left an indelible mark on the world. He left us to be with the ancestors on March 2, 2022. May God continue to keep and bless him as he transitions to his rightful place in the circle of life.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, March 7, 2022 at 1:00 PM Divine True Holiness Church of God in Blacksburg, SC.
