In addition to his parents, Stephen was preceded in death by his grandmother who raised him, Mary Hairston; and his aunt who helped raise him, Annette Hairston.
Stephen was a 1972 graduate of Martinsville High School, where he excelled in football and basketball. In 1978, he graduated from Norfolk State University with a bachelor's degree in Social Work. He was a United States Army Veteran. Stephen was a member of St. Paul High Street Baptist Church.
Those left to cherish his memory include: two daughters, Alisha (Erik Garcia) Hairston of Austin, TX, and Krystal (Chris) Abrille of Atlanta, GA; one son, Demeterius (Pamala) Martin of Martinsville, VA; two brothers, Frank Hairston of McLeansville, NC, and Dennis Hairston of St Louis, MO; seven grandchildren, Demeka Bolton, De'Miya Martin, Shequia Hairston, Ka'Leila Abrille, Lincoln Abrille, Charlie Abrille, and Ledger Abrille; and a host of other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the C.R.V. Memorial Chapel at Hairston Funeral Home with Pastor Matthew Brown, Eulogist. Burial will be private. Viewing will be held on Monday, February 7, 2022, at Hairston Funeral Home between the hours of 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. In accordance with the CDC, a face covering, and social distancing is required.
