On August 22, 1957, Tommy and Ethel Bailey welcomed their beautiful knee baby, Gloria Jean Bailey, into the world. “Jean” as many would call her, would grow to establish a close bond with each of her twelve siblings. In 1979, she married O’Neal Chambers. They welcomed their first blessing, in the form of a baby girl, Rhonda in 1980. God surely didn’t stop there. Eight years later, she welcomed her second blessing into the world, another baby girl (spoiled might I add) Alfrenette. Jean held many titles and roles over the years. She was a 1975 graduate of Forest Hill High School. She was a Licensed Social Worker with Hinds County Human Resource Agency for over 40 years. She was an active member of New McRaven Hill and later continued in her Christian walk as a dedicated choir member and disciple at New Mt. Calvary Christian Center under the leadership of Apostle Dr. John E. Williams, Sr. for over 32 years. She was a resilient mother, a supportive mother-in-law, an amazing sister, a wonderful aunt, a beautiful friend, an encouraging confidant and a prayer warrior for many. However, her most beloved title had to be GANNY thanks to “Ma’s Tootbug.’’ Jean could always be found lifting others to be the best that they could be. Anyone that knew her experienced her gift of encouragement, songs, motivation, and inspiration with every encounter. Though those gifts, she opened her home to so many people. Ellis Avenue was a home away from home for so many of those who called her “Momma Jean.” Her home was filled with many memories from friends of the family; from her play-son Stephen blowing up the microwave to Veronica getting fussed at, or Tonya and Nicki getting called “fast” as they headed out the house. Not to mention, Ora, April, and Keisha putting Nette out of her own room whenever they stayed. She touched many lives virtually as well. She could be found sending a spiritual message or scripture to many of her Facebook friends and text message buddies every morning at 8am. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Eugene Bailey, Rayford Bailey, Thomas “Preacher” Bailey, Robert Lee Bailey, and James Bailey; four sisters, Catherine Bailey, Rozena Bailey, Tommie Lee Claxton, Ruby Latham, and her dear friends Ester Stewart, Arletha Freeman & Tylonia Givens. She leaves to cherish her memories two daughters, Rhonda (Jefferey) Davis and Alfrenette Chambers; one granddaughter – her sweet “Tootbug,” Jenae Rhea-Bailey Davis; three sisters, Ann Robinson, Mary “Lily” Thomas, and Cynthia Bailey; one aunt, Lou Bertha Murray; two God Daughters, Tonya (David) Lee & Leslie Pickens; her “bonus children” Stephen Johnson, Dyelicia Vasquez &Veronica Ratliff, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
