Quchawn Demond Holmes, known to everyone as “Coach Q”, made his earthly entrance on November 20, 1975 to Cheryl A. Holmes and Outher Rucker.
Coach Q grew up in High Point, NC, where he grew up with the love of football. He attended St. Luke Lutheran Church, where he was a boy scout, and a team mate to other kids that lived in his community. Coach Q attended schools of Guilford County School System, where he was a star football player in high school. At his 12th grade graduation, he was the only student to receive an award for being the only student that attended school from kindergarten all the way up to his graduation, who never ended up missing one day from school. His passion for football was remarkable. He wanted to go to college to play football, but his acceptance letter didn’t arrive; so he entered into the Marine Corp. While he was in boot camp, they sent his acceptance letter, but it was too late because he was already enlisted. Coach Q served his country from 1994 to 2002 where he received an honorable discharge.
Coach Q came home and decided that he wanted to make a difference in his community. So, he worked at Furniture Land South during the day, went to the kids’ practices in the evening, and their games on the weekends. He was a coach that coached for many non-profit organizations because he always said that his payment was being able to see these young boys and girls grow into responsible young women and young men. Q was a coach in our community for 23 years until COVID hit in 2020. Coach Q was diagnosed with lung cancer on October of 2020, and they told him on Christmas Eve that he only had two months left to live. We said that we know God and we’re not accepting that; so we trusted God and he delivered Q from cancer. It came back with a vengeance. Coach Q fought a good fight, but he was tired of all the transfusions and chemotherapy; so he made his earthly departure on October 9, 2021. Coach Q loved watching his sports and cracking jokes. He loved people and showed them that he had a very forgiving heart. He loved playing cards with his wife and best friend Garry (G) Hines. Coach Q was firm with all of the kids that he came into contact with because he wanted them to become great people in our community. Q would always say, “Baby, I don’t care how people treat me because at the end of every day, it’s always about the kids.” Like the kids said, “There will never be another Coach Q.” Job well done baby! You will forever be loved, baby, and missed. Thanks for being my best friend for the last 10 years, and thanks for forever being my soul mate.
