Rev. Dr. Harry Lee McCall, 75, of Columbus, GA passed Monday, September 20, 2021 in Columbus, GA

Memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. EST Saturday, September 25, 2021 in the C.T. Chapel Taylor Funeral Home.

Reverend Dr. Harry Lee McCall was the first child born to the late Mr. George W. McCall and Mrs. Leola S. McCall in Mobile, Alabama. He professed belief in Jesus as his Savior and was baptized at Liberty Baptist Church. His education began in the public schools of Mobile, AL. Dr. McCall felt the urging of the Lord’s call to the gospel ministry and was licensed to preach at Liberty Baptist Church.

Reverend McCall was ordained in 1964. Upon completion of high school, Rev. McCall enrolled in Selma University in Salma, Alabama, where he received the Bachelor of Theology from Selma University in Selma Alabama. In 1979, Dr. McCall completed One Unit in Clinical Pastoral Education from Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Medicine in Richmond, Virginia. The Master of Divinity degree was conferred upon him in 1980 by the Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. With a thirst and yearning for continued studies, Dr. McCall found his way to Pittsburg Theological Seminary where he received the Doctor of Ministry degree in 1985.

Dr. H. L. McCall has been a beacon of light throughout the world. He has severed a gospel preacher and pastor, lecturer, professor of Old and New Testaments for Selma University (off site campus) in Courtland, Alabama, Adjunct Professor of Field Work for the School of Theology at Virginia Union University, professor of Old and New Testaments at Lynchburg Seminary in Lynchburg, Virginia, professor of Old and New Testaments at the American Baptist College (extension program) in Columbus, GA. Dr. McCall has taught various classes within the National Baptist Convention of America, Inc., National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. a host of state conventions, and local associations throughout Alabama, Virginia, and Georgia.

Reverend McCall was the founding director for the Beulah Height University (extension program) in Columbus, Georgia where his dream was to have a degree program in theological studies in the city of Columbus. His dream came to fruition in June of 2015. His dream currently lives as Dr. Marcus Gibson has sought to continue leading the way as the current director.

Dr. McCall devoted his life to the gospel ministry and has served: Shady Grove Baptist Church, Millers Ferry, Alabama (1964-1969), Rising Star Baptist Church, Sylacauga, Alabama (1969-1973), First Baptist Church, Sheffield, Alabama (1973-1976), Main Street Baptist Church, Clifton Forge, Virginia (1976-1978), Bethany Baptist Church, Petersburg, Virginia (1979-1989), First African Baptist Church, Columbus, Georgia (1989-1994). He also served as interim pastor of Nazareth Baptist Church, Columbus, Georgia (2006) and Corinth Missionary Baptist Church, Columbus, Georgia (2009-2010).

Reverend Dr. H. L. McCall departed this life surrounded by his loving family and medical staff on the morning of September 20, 2021, at his residents in Columbus, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. George W. McCall and Mrs. Leola S. McCall, James McCall (Hattie), and Lillie Mae Powell (Frank).

He leaves to cherish fond memories: wife of 16 years, Mrs. Ella L. McCall, four sons: James Ivan Warren (Gretchen) of Chester, VA, Rev. Christopher Lee McCall (Jennifer) of Columbus, GA, John Frank McDougan (Angela) of Chesterfield, VA, and Anthony McDougan of Petersburg, VA, three daughters: Rev. Dr. Felicia Ann McDougan of Chesterfield, VA, Shelia Thompson of Richmond, VA, and Karen McDougan of VA, five siblings: Georgia Mae Callier (Perry) of Mobile, AL, Mary White (Freddie) of Mobile, AL, Judy Johnson (Robert) of Montgomery, AL, Leo McCall of Mobile, AL and George McCall of Mobile, AL, fifteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one siter-in-law, six brothers-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and special family friends.
