Obituary For Bernice Gibbons King

Bernice Gibbons King was called from labor to that celestial home of eternal love and grace on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 in Augusta, GA. Graveside Services will be held Thursday, September 16, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. at Pierce Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The daughter of the late Furmen Gibbons and Hattie Mae (Hall) Gibbons, she was born July 17, 1940 in Jefferson County (Bartow), GA. She was educated in the Jefferson County school system. She completed numerous theology courses by mail. Bernice accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at an early age at Pierce Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Bartow, Georgia, and attended faithfully until her health began to decline. She was committed to reading the holy bible daily. Bernice enjoyed having telephone conversations with family and friends. She found comfort in solving word search puzzles and crossword puzzles. On occasion, coloring would be one of her comforting activities as well. Bernice lived in Florida and in New York. When she returned to Georgia, she took care of her young son, her parents, and brother. She deeply cared for her family. She worked for the New York Telephone Company (currently Verizon) and retired from the Wadley Shirt Company, Wadley, GA. Bernice felt her greatest accomplishment in life was raising her son with the help of God, her parents, and brother. Bernice was formerly married to the late Joe Mathis and had her son Alonzo Mathis from this union. She later married the late Mr. King. Bernice's love, devotion and spirit have touched countless lives and she will be missed dearly. Bernice was preceded in death by parents Furmen and Hattie Mae Gibbons; sister, Alice G. Banner; brothers, Leroy Gibbons, Joe L. Gibbons and Samuel Gibbons. Bernice leave to cherish her memory, son Alonzo Mathis, grandchildren, great grandchildren, aunt Maggie Knowles of Hollywood, FL; brother in-law Wade Banner of Bronx, NY, sister-in-law Estelle Gibbons; Charlotte, NC; devoted God daughter, Vatie Moye of Wadley, GA; devoted niece Veronica Jones of NJ; devoted cousin Glenda Freeman of Louisville, GA and a host of loving and caring nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
