Obituary For Mr. Walter Lee Torrence

Mr. Walter Lee Torrence, the youngest of five children to the late Margaret and Herbert Torrence, Sr., made his transition from this earthly life on Sunday, September 5, 2021. He was born on November 24, 1962 in Newark, NJ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Torrence, Jr., and a nephew, Kevin Torrence.

Walter, aka Walt, Rashad, Uncle Doo Doo, Mountain Man (for his shooting basketball), Brother Rush (because he was always in a hurry), was a graduate of Barringer High School, Class of 1980. Growing up in New Jersey, Walter had several jobs, one in particular was with the Essex County Correction Center. He was of the Islamic faith.

Walter enjoyed life to the fullest, and also loved his family and friends. He wasn’t a stranger to anyone. Walter enjoyed his sports, was an avid New York Giants fan, enjoyed playing basketball, shooting pool, and always looked for a good chess game. He later moved to High Point, NC to take care of his father. In 2013, Walter started working for R. R. Donnelly as a baler.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories, three sisters, Paula Torrence, and Robbie Torrence of High Point, NC, and Beatrice (John) Simms of Matthews, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, extended family of North Newark, NJ, and other family and friends.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 4:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.
