Curtis Bernard Carter was born of January 22, 1953 Winnsboro, South Carolina to the late Bennie D. Sr. and Willie Mae Lumpkin Carter, He was called to rest on Saturday, July 24, 2021 from the comfort of his home in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Curtis was educated in the public schools of Fairfield County. He was a 1976 graduated of Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and was a star basketball player. He was also a graduate of the South Carolina Bankers School and received many other banking credits. Curtis started his career as a Banker with Southern Bank and Trust and continued his career with First Union National Bank, First Citizens Bank and Prudential Financial. After 35 years of banking, Curtis retired from South State Bank as a Branch Manager.
In 1980, Curtis was united in holy matrimony to the former Yojuana Legette. They have a daughter Krystal (Isaiah) Venning and a son Dexter R, (Jasamine) Carter and three grandchildren.
Until he became ill, Curtis was a devoted member and Deacon of St. Paul Baptist Church in Orangeburg, SC. He served as Chairman of the Trustee Board, Church Treasurer, Chairman if the Finance and Budget Committee and a member if the Building Committee. Curtis also served as Vice-Chairman of the Deacon Board, member of the Human Resource Committee and as a Sunday School Teacher.
Curtis was a very active member of the Orangeburg Community. He served as a leader in many organizations: NAACP (Life Member ad Economic Development Chair), Claflin University (UNCF past Chairman and Distinguished Board of Visitors), South Carolina State University Business Advisory Council, Downtown Orangeburg Revitalization Association. Curtis also served on the SC JEDA Board of Directors (SC Jobs Economic Development Authority) in Columbia, SC.
Curtis's Mason Affiliations: member and Past Master of Edisto Lodge #39, Past Commander in Chief Robert Shaw Wilkinson Consistory #220, South Carolina Council of Deliberation, Grand Inspector General United Supreme Council Southern Jurisdiction, Past Potentate if Jeddah Temple #160 and a member if Edisto Chapter #258. He also served as Past Excellent High Priest of Harmony Chapter No. 63 and Right Worshipful Grand Treasurer of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of South Carolina.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie D. Sr. and Willie Mae Lumpkin Carter, and an infant sister, Oneida Carter.
Curtis leaves to cherish precious memories, his wife, Yojuana Carter; his daughter, Krystal (Isaiah) Venning of Rock Hill, SC; his son, Dexter R. (Jasamine) Carter of Orangeburg, SC; a brother, Dennis; Carter of Winnsboro, SC; Mother-in-law, Eva Mae Legette; four sisters-in-law, Teresa Kelly of Columbia, SC, Sheila Legette of Los Angeles, CA, Grete Cater of Winnsboro, SC, and Esther Legette of Irmo, SC; one brother-in-law, Calvin Legette of Irmo, SC; three grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, Isaiah Venning, Jr., Langston Venning and Kendalynn Carter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and caring friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 30, 2021, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
