STINSON, Jr., Charles

Charles S. Stinson, Jr. of Atlanta, transitioned to "Life Eternal" on February 3, 2021. Charles, the only son of Rev. Charles S. Stinson, Sr. and Willie Minter Stinson, was a "Grady Baby" and lived his entire life in Atlanta, except for a brief stint in the US Army. A graduate of David T. Howard HS, Clark College, and Atlanta University, he lived a life of service and justice.

He worked at the Butler Street Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) before taking the helm as the first Executive Director of the Joseph B. Whitehead YMCA (aka the "Ollie Street Y"). Charles also worked at the Urban League and Frontiers Unlimited before retiring from the Federal Highway Administration as the Region 4, Director of Civil Rights in 1999.

While at Clark, he married his childhood sweetheart, a Spelmanite, Emily Davis. To this union, which flourished for more than 67 years, 3 boys were born: Chuck, Mike, and Scott. Charles and Emily were world travelers having visited almost all of the United States, Europe, Africa, Asia, Central America, Canada, and the Caribbean. They even had the pleasure of meeting with Nelson Mandela in South Africa.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and by his daughter-in-love: Juaqueta Grooms Stinson. He is survived by his wife Emily; sons Charles III, Michael (Patricia), and Scott (Michelle); six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be Friday, February 12, 2-6 PM at Knox Funeral Home, 2357 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, with an Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Omega Service starting at 6 PM.
