Obituary For Mittie Smith

Mittie Young Smith was born on January 21, 1936 in Warren County, North Carolina to the late Tellie Young and Julia Perry Young. She departed her earthly life on Friday, November 27, 2020 at her residence.

She was educated in the Warren County School System and graduated in 1955 from John R. Hawkins High School. After graduating high school, she moved to Mount Vernon, New York, where she met and married Harold Smith, her devoted husband for 44 years.

Mittie relocated to Greensboro, North Carolina and joined Mount Zion Baptist Church. She later joined St. James Baptist Church where she was a faithful member for over 40 years. During her service at St. James, she joined the Missionary, the Senior Choir, and was a Deaconess. Mittie was involved in many community activities, volunteered at numerous nursing homes, and was a member of the Bible Band. Mittie was employed at Fox Cleaners in Greensboro for 10 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Harold Smith Sr.; one son, Harold Smith Jr.; one granddaughter, Ashanti Johnson; three sisters, Nora Young, Gertrude Young, and Ethel Young; two brothers, John Robert Young and Charles Young.

Mittie leaves to cherish her memories; two daughters, Deborah Clegg (Richard) and Hilda McKinnis; one son, Joseph Jerome Smith, all of Greensboro, NC; one daughter-inlaw, Faye Smith of Tarboro, NC; seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren; two sisters, Alberta King of Hampton, VA and Geraldine Watson (Richard) of Louisburg, NC; one brother, Tellie Young (Alma) of Baltimore, MD; two sisters-in-laws, Bertha Mae Young of Mount Vernon, NY and Maybelle Young of New Jersey; one adopted son Ron Galloway along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A public visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 1,2020 from 4pm-6pm at the Cassie Coote-Brown Memorial Chapel of Perry J. Brown Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at Lakeview Memorial Park.

I can recall one Sunday at Emmanuel when mommy Smith would get up to sing I'm looking at her praying that she hold on to the back of the bench. She will be missed by the McKinney family.
