Mamie was a lifelong resident of Augusta and a devoted member of the Historic Tabernacle Baptist Church. She was a 1956 graduate of Lucy C. Laney High School. Mamie graduated from Fisk University with a B.A. in Sociology and the University of Georgia with an M.A. in Education. During her 30-year professional career with the Richmond County Board of Education she taught at A.R. Johnson Jr. High School, T.W. Josey High School and The Academy of Richmond County. Mamie held active membership in the following organizations: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. where she was a Life Member and previously served as President of the Zeta Xi Omega Chapter from 1993-1995; Tabernacle Baptist Church Senior Retirees Ministry where she served as a past President; Richmond County Retired Educator’s Association; Church Women United; National Association of University Women (NAUW) where she served as a past President; and the Augusta Alumni Chapter of Silhouettes of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. where she previously served as President. Through the years she received many awards from organizations, such as the Silhouettes, Church Women United and NAUW.
Mamie was preceded in death by her father, mother and husband, James H. Dunn, Jr.
Survivors are her children, Lisa (Keith) Alford, Kathy Dunn and Sonya (Darrell) Brailsford; sister, Nellie Cummings Hampton; sister-in-law, Frankalene Dunn; brother-in-law, James Hatcher; four grandchildren, Alexandria Johnson, Lauren Johnson, Caleb Alford, and Chloe Brailsford, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Public viewing Tuesday, October 6, 2020 from 3:00pm-7:00pm at the mortuary. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at 1:00 pm at Cedar Grove Cemetery, 120 Watkins St., Augusta, GA 30901.
