Ms. Mary Ann Canty

01/24/1960 - 04/08/2020

Private funeral services will be held for Ms. Mary Ann Canty, 60, of 109 McCathern Lane, Elloree, SC.

Mary Ann Davis Canty was born in Vance, South Carolina on January 24, 1960. She was the daughter of the late Johnny Lee Davis and Elease Davis. She was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 8, 2020.

Mary Ann accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1994 at Eutawville Holy Deliverance Center under pastorship of Hinson Sr. and Janie Pooser, where she served faithfully until her heavenly transition. Mary often described this as the most significant time of her life, recalling the moment when Reverend Pooser told her that her life will get “better and better and better.”

With her new life in Christ, Mary Ann went from being a bus driver (which she loved) with only a GED, to earning a Masters Degree in education and realizing a dream that she had long thought was out of her reach, becoming a teacher. Mary Ann went on to teach at Clarendon School District One for 14 years and was currently teaching at Felton Laboratory Charter School. Mary Ann truly enjoyed working with her students and was known for always reaching out to the neediest students and offering extra tutoring, an encouraging word, or even a weekend away from a tough home situation to enjoy quality time with her own grandchildren, where she made them feel like one of the family.

Mary Ann leaves to cherish her loving memories, her husband, John Canty; six children: Latasha (Elko) Brown, John (Cherry) Davis, Anthony (Tamica), Jonas, Shiniki, and Byron; one stepson, Anthony (Rayneish) Olin; three adopted children Katrina( Todd) Harr, Vincent Thompson and Lindsay Gilyard; 12 beloved grandsons who enjoyed talking about their life plans and screaming at a good football game with their grandma; nine sweet granddaughters who enjoyed keeping her up on the latest trends (TikTok), clothes, and make-up and indulging in her love for hair makeup and all things fashion; five sisters: Geraldine Randolph, Patricia Taylor, Maebelle (Joseph) King, Eloise Davis and Cassie Davis; two brothers: Johnny (Michelle) Davis and Ricky Davis; a host of nieces and nephews, who she loved as if they were her own; and countless cousins and friends that she truly loved to life.

Family and friends may call at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Latasha & Mr. Elko Brown, 109 McCathern Lane, Elloree, SC or Simmons Funeral Home of Santee, SC.
